Chalkboard from a Silver Tray

A few years ago I bought my oldest daughter a few vintage trays from Goodwill and painted them to hang in her room as magnetic memo boards.  However, some of them wouldn't hold the magnets.  She brought me one of these trays the other day and told me that I could re-do it for my store.  I knew I didn't want it to be just a painted tray, that it had to have some added purpose to it so I decided to turn it into a chalkboard.

I don't have any pictures other than the final product, but I can tell you how I did it.  I started with a silver tray from Goodwill and primed and painted it with spray paint.  My favorite spray paint to use is Valspar because it doesn't run and it doesn't have a thick, sticky feeling that most spray paints give you.  Next I took a two inch foam brush and brushed on two coats of chalkboard paint.  It would have been fine to leave it like that, but I wanted a little more layers to it so I added a white border.

  1. Cute! I want to try some chalkboard paint. I have a friend who says she hates it b/c of the mess of the chalk when her kids want to draw/write on things she's painted. Mine are older and I'd probably draw/write one thing to stay that way for a season/holiday. You've inspired me to try to find some old trays at our local Goodwill to play with. Thanks Jennifer!

  2. You have an adorable blog here - I'm loving all you projects! I especially love this sweet little chalkboard sign. I love the coral color and the sweet saying. We call my little girl "bunny" so it touched my heart!
